Description
Hardly anyone amongst those who have either visited the Valley or read about it in books or travelogues has failed to appreciate the overwhelming grandeur and beauty of the Valley’s scenery. Right from Kalhana onwards, who in Rajatarangini (1.4) wrote that “Learning, lofty homes, saffron, ice-cold water and grapes—things that in heaven are difficult to find—are common here”. Poets, scholars and writers have attempted to portray the magnificence and splendor of the Valley of Kashmir, one of the most blessed spots upon the earth. The distinguishing feature of the book is the writer’s deep love and even passion for mountains and natural scenery which at times shows almost Goldsmith’s itch of restlessness in the blood that makes him an alien to the comfortable dogtrot conventions of civilized life. “A man in the town or city”, says the writer “is supposed to wear hundreds of masks during the day in order to hide his intentions and ambitions” but “the people in mountains are free from the masks as the mountains that surround them”. At places like these the author sounds like Rousseau who believed that original human impulses are good because they are natural; men have become evil because they left uncontaminated nature growing luxurious and artificial. To escape from this state of sickness, he believes, we must return to mountains and meadows. There we live in the open with the smell of the earth in our nostrils and the sounds of chattering brooks and canorous breeze moving in between the trees join the bleating of sheep in our ears. He feels sad at the plight of his countrymen who inspite of having the world’s famous highlands, mountains and high altitude tracks within their easy access, lack the zeal and enthusiasm for exploration and adventure.
